AARP Tax Aide will be at the South Iredell Senior Center every Thursday and Friday from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. through Fri., April 10 to help seniors file their taxes. An appointment is required and you must bring all tax papers and your 2013 tax return. An interpreter is available upon prior request for Spanish speaking individuals, and a wheelchair is located at the Senior Center to help assist individuals who are physically impaired. This free service is available to all seniors and low income individuals.

Mar 3    FREE Seminar - A Living Will is Not a Medical Order
Advance Directives ? a DNR (do not resuscitate), Living Will, and Health-Care Power of Attorney are three important documents to have in place if a person wants to have some say in their health care during a situation where they may be near the end of life. A lot of people believe that a Living Will is the same as a DNR order. It is NOT! A Living Will includes the individual?s wishes regarding extreme measures at end-of-life care - feeding tubes, mechanical ventilation, heroic measures, dialysis, etc. A Living Will helps to direct the physician?s decision-making during care of the critically ill person who has little chance of recovery. What people should understand is that a Living Will is NOT a medical order that can be followed if there is not a DNR or a MOST form (Medical Order for Scope Treatment) signed by a physician, which comes into play when a patient has stopped breathing and their heart has stopped beating. A DNR is a medical order not to start chest compressions or other cardiac drugs on someone?s heart when their heart has already stopped beating, and not to put them on mechanical ventilation or artificially ventilate them when they have stopped breathing. A MOST form includes a DNR and other life-saving and life-prolonging interventions when someone is in critical condition. The majority of people don?t know what a MOST form is and some are afraid to complete a DNR, fearing that they will not get treatment as a result. Come learn the facts on Tues., March 3 from 10 a.m. - noon and have your questions answered. Learn why the MOST form is so important and how it can be helpful. Although this seminar is open to the general public, it is specifically designed to train and educate individuals that work with older adults in the use of a DNR and the MOST form, as a means of helping and informing older adults and their families in having a say in their health care during end of life situations. The seminar will be led by Kimberlee Driscoll, RN, BSN Nurse Liaison and held at South Iredell Senior Center, 202 N Church St. Mooresville. To register, call 704-662-3337 by Thurs., Feb. 26. Mar 11    National Poison Prevention Week
Did you know North Carolina has one of the highest overdose death rates in the U.S.? Medications are NOT meant to be shared. A medicine that has benefits for one could be fatal for another. In recognition of National Poison Prevention week, the Mooresville Police Department will be at the Center on March 11 to provide the public with a safe means of disposing of drugs. These are drugs that might otherwise end up in our water system, putting young children at risks and increase the likelihood of endangering someone?s life or even causing death. Please bring expired medications, both prescription and over the counter, that you no longer want or use. The take back will occur between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Feel free to bring medications in their labeled containers, as these will be taken and destroyed as well. Kim Robertson is a renowned performer, arranger and recording artist who has stretched the boundaries of the harp for a new generation of performers and audiences. As a pioneer in the American folk harp movement, she combines an improvisational spirit with a passionate sense of tradition, bringing a contemporary touch to a centuries-old instrument. 

Born in Wisconsin, she is classically trained on piano and orchestral harp. In the mid-70's, Kim's discovery of the Celtic harp grew into a profound love for the instrument, setting her upon the path of exploration for which she is now widely known. Kim has traveled with her harp from concert halls to grass roots folk clubs, from luxury cruise ships to remote mountaintops; she has performed concerts by candlelight, delivered singing telegrams and played herself on an episode of "Beverly Hills 90210". 

She regularly tours the USA , Canada and Europe , and is still recognized as one of the most popular folk harpists performing today. Her work encompasses numerous recording projects, published harp arrangements, and an international itinerary of workshops and retreats. Her latest release is "Forget Not the Angels."  "One of the best players recording today...her original works have that traditional ring of truth and authenticity to them.”

This FREE class focuses on learning to live a healthier life with arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, and many other conditions that challenge us as we age. This is a Full-Day Course: 8 Hours of Classroom Training with 1 Hour of Range Time

Our North Carolina/South Carolina Concealed Carry Class is a must for residents who wish to obtain their Concealed Carry Handgun Permit. This course covers all the legal, safety and handgun proficiency issues required by each state in order to complete your permit application process. It is a mandatory 8 hour class plus range time.

Students must be at least 21 years of age, legal NC or SC resident, familiar with handguns, able to pass a written exam and qualify with their handgun (a .380 caliber handgun or larger) with a 70% or better score.

Students must bring ear and eye protection, notebook and pen, 50 rounds of ammunition, a holster or method of carrying concealed.

Please pack a light lunch that you can consume quickly during a short break.

The certificate you will receive upon completion of this course has no expiration date and is appropriate for anyone who might handle a firearm. To obtain your CCH License, you must present the certificate you receive upon completion of this course to the sheriff's office in your county of residence. The certification of completion of the CCH class is valid in all 100 counties in North Carolina.

The Pet Saver class is an eight hour course covering first aid skills and information designed to help pet parents keep their pets happy and healthy. As a student in the class you will have the opportunity to learn how to handle many life-threatening situations that can affect dogs and cats, such as choking, poisoning, bleeding, trauma injuries, snakebites and insect bites. You will have the opportunity to learn how to perform rescue breathing and CPR and how to tell which one is needed in a given situation. Subjects covered will include: dealing with frustration, fatigue and pain, exercising for improving strength, flexibility and endurance, appropriate use of medications, how to communicate effectively with healthcare professionals, nutrition and how to evaluate treatments. The class will be taught every Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon starting March 17. Participants receive training materials and a FREE Healthy Living book. A snack will be provided. Is this something that you?ve been putting off? We plan throughout our life ? college, graduation, marriage, family, career, retirement, etc. Planning for your wishes to be carried out at the end of life should be part of your planning process. It can be very comforting and bring a feeling of peace knowing that this has been done, not to mention a relief to family members that would be faced with making your end of life decisions at a time when they are emotionally distressed. Clint Ingram will be at South Iredell Senior Center on Tues., March 31 from noon-1 p.m. to provide information on the options available and how you can plan now so your end of life decisions are what you want.
